Have a Warranty With Another Company?
Did another company install your A/C or heat pump system more than 1 or 2 years ago? Do you have a system that is still under a manufacturer warranty? Many residential systems have a 5-10 year parts warranty by the manufacturer. It is customary for the installing contractor / servicer to provide a complimentary 1 year labor warranty, and in order to obtain free labor services during this time you must contact them. A few companies (although I'm sure they charge extra for it) provide a 2 year labor warranty. Even fewer yet (perhaps less than 5% of the installations performed today) have a 10 year labor warranty (for which a substantial premium was paid!). Most, are only 1 year, and after the initial 1 year period labor service is provided on a paid basis only.
Most customers simply call the company that installed their system, believing that they are obligated to use that company if they want to obtain the parts warranty portion of their HVAC warranty after their initial labor warranty period is up. There are lots of great companies out there, and if you are happy with their service please continue to use them. They know your system and they probably value you as a customer. If however, you are not happy with their service (there are lots of not-so-great companies out there too) please know that you have no obligation to continue using them.
